Netflix ($NFLX) unveiled its secret Chinese strategy. While the U.S.-China trade war keeps going, the popular media-services provider is going to tap millions of Mandarin-speaking people around the world.
The company doesn’t have any plans to launch in China. Its target audience is Mandarin-speaking diaspora. Mandarin is one of the most popular Chinese language dialects (commonly known as Simple Chinese), spoken by thousands of emigrants in the U.S. and other countries.
According to Alibaba-owned ($BABA) streaming platform Youku, last week Netflix had bought the exclusive distribution rights outside of China for “I Hear You”, a 24-episode romantic comedy. Insiders say that the streaming company plans to spend more money on acquiring rights to Mandarin-language content and producing its own originals for Chinese outside of China.
