Continuing with yesterday’s article about their new Android phone line, this week’s Trivia Tuesday will be dedicated to Nokia. Keep reading for three fun facts about one of the most indestructible mobile companies – both in their products and their business.
1. Nokia is the oldest smartphone company
Nokia was founded by engineer Fredrik Idestam in 1865 as a wood pulp mill in Southwestern Finland. In 1871, Idestam opened his second mill by the Nokianvirta river, inspiring the company name of Nokia. Nokia started off as a manufacturer of paper, then moved on to rubber for products such as galoshes and tires. In 1912, the Finnish Cable Works, a cable and electronics business, was established. Finnish Cable Works worked closely with Nokia and began branching out into electronics in the 1960s. In 1963, they began developing radio telephones for army and emergency services, dipping their toes into the telecommunications business. Finally in 1967, Finnish Cable Works, Nokia, and Finnish Rubber works merged into the Nokia Corporation to produce rubber, cable, forestry, electronics, and power generation. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Nokia became a household name for their production of telecommunication devices.
2. Nokia’s ringtones are hidden messages in Morse Code
A less well known fact, many of Nokia’s tones represent messages in morse code. For example, the “Ascending” SMS tune is code for “Connecting People,” which is Nokia’s slogan. The “Special” tone is translated as “SMS.” Check out the video above if you want to see live translations of Nokia’s tones.
3. At its peak, Nokia manufactured about 210 million handsets per day
According to The Geeks Club, that averages to 6.5 phones manufactured per second. Unfortunately for Nokia, the introduction of new competitors and operating systems has diminished this rate significantly. Hopefully, Nokia’s phones will succeed and its reputation will be restored under Microsoft’s supervision.
